Affordable government: Making government affordable is the new reality for current and future public sector organizations to ensure continued delivery services for its citizens. Demographic ageing, increasing customer demands for personalized services, and growing sustainability challenges will create the biggest challenges for governments to meet expenditure gaps or shortfalls of billions of dollars. The national strategies for sustainable development should not be regarded as one among many but constitute the overarching framework for all policies. To secure oversight and public accountability, a parliamentary committee on policy coherence for sustainability could be established (or strengthened if it exists already). The purpose of this special issue is to explore sustainability from a futures perspective. Useful futures analyses do not attempt to predict the future. Instead good futures analyses work to imagine, describe, and/or create possible futures in such ways as to identify issues of concern for today’s decision makers. - What can an Integral futures approach tell us about how to address sustainability problems? - How can we identify present actions and pathways that are consistent with our visions of a desirable future? - How can futures work achieve influence on public policy and decision-making?
